  • Creamy: Oat milk is the perfect milk for making a creamy latte.
  • Antioxidant-rich: Matcha is rich in antioxidants that help protect your cells from free radicals. So, matcha is delicious, caffeinated, and good for you!

What is Matcha?

The art of making matcha was an early East Asian custom that dates back centuries. This tradition was to grind tea leaves. Then, using a bamboo whisk, beat them in a bowl with hot water.

Matcha is made from green tea leaves specially grown for matcha powder. These leaves are shade-grown for at least three to four weeks before they are harvested and processed. By shading the trees, the chlorophyll production in the plant is raised, which is why these green tea leaves are so vibrant in color and carry a natural sweetness to them.

When the leaves have matured, they are ground into a fine powder turned into matcha.

A glass of matcha latte sits on a wooden board with a small bowl of matcha powder, a whisk, and a ceramic pitcher in the background.

How To Choose The Right Matcha Powder

To make sure you are getting high-quality matcha powder, there are a few different things to keep an eye out for. The first thing you will need to notice is the color. If the matcha is a dull green, then it is a low-quality matcha powder and will taste like it. You want the actual powder you choose to be vibrant.

Check the origins of your matcha! If the matcha powder you’re looking at is from Japan, then you are in for a treat, as Japan knows how to make superb matcha powder. While you’re looking at the label, if the package says “stone-ground,” then make sure to add that to your cart for authentic matcha.

Matcha Grades

There are two different grades of matcha to look out for. The first is ceremonial-grade matcha, and the second is culinary-grade matcha. Ceremonial grade matcha is the one that you want! (While ceremonial grade matcha may come at an additional cost, it is well worth it.)

  • Culinary Grade
This grade of matcha, while not as high a quality as the ceremonial, is still an excellent choice of matcha to drink. The difference is that these leaves are made differently to be used for other purposes than just drinking. Have a recipe with matcha that looks appetizing? This is the grade of matcha you want to use.
  • Ceremonial Grade
This matcha has the simple purpose of being sipped and enjoyed. This matcha is the highest quality matcha you can buy and has been used in Japanese tea ceremonies for centuries (hence the name). Thankfully, this matcha doesn’t have to be consumed only at a ceremony.

Nutrition For Mental Health

Matcha tea is rich in antioxidants and contains 30-40mg of caffeine per serving. Here at Raepublic, we are all about sharing healthy recipes with nutritional facts.

An animal study found that matcha has an antidepressant effect on stress-vulnerable mice through the activation of their dopaminergic system. Check out this helpful resource for some more tips on how to improve your mental health.

Ingredients + Notes

The only thing better than a quick recipe is a simple one.

Flat lay of matcha latte ingredients on a gray surface.
  • Water: Hot water is used to whisk a teaspoon of matcha powder into liquid tea.
  • Matcha: High-quality green tea powder is what you want to go for! Read the ingredients list and ensure that there is no added sugar.
  • Oat Milk: Unsweetened oat milk will make your green tea latte silky smooth!
  • Maple Syrup: My favorite sweetener to use in drinks. Since it is a liquid, it dissolves beautifully.

Recipe Variations

This matcha oat milk latte is tasty as is. Here are some substitutions if needed, though.

  • Plant-based milk: Oat milk is great in this recipe, but I always recommend using what you have on hand (such as cashew milk, almond milk, or hemp milk). Remember that oat milk is naturally very sweet, so you may need to adjust your sweetener accordingly.
  • Sweetener: I am a fan of using maple syrup because it is a liquid, so you don’t have to worry about whether it dissolves. However, you can use agave or simple syrup instead if needed.

How To Make Oat Milk Matcha

Grab your bamboo whisk and get ready for four simple steps.

  1. Heat oat milk. (Microwave for 60 seconds or in a small saucepan over medium heat. (Remove before it boils.)
  2. Sift matcha powder through a fine-mesh strainer into a small matcha bowl.
  1. Pour hot water over top and whisk until clumps dissolve and the liquid is smooth.
  1. Add matcha mixture, maple syrup, and oat milk into a cup, and enjoy!

Servings Ideas

This frothy latte is perfect as a stand-alone drink. If you are looking for pairing inspo, here are my recommendations.

Storage Tips

As soon as you open a container of matcha, it should be stored in an airtight container. If you have a special container that removes all the oxygen from it, that is even better!

As for your matcha latte, I recommend drinking it fresh.
