Benefits of Lemon Water

Here at Raepublic, we highlight some of the health benefits of the main ingredient or main nutrient of a recipe, specifically those that can impact your mental health.

Lemons are a great source of vitamin C, so drinking lemon water can be a great way to increase your vitamin C intake. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals and reduces oxidative stress. It also improves the absorption of iron [1].

Scientific studies (a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial and cross-sectional analysis) showed that supplementation with Vitamin C increased mental vitality [2]. In addition, multiple studies have shown that vitamin C intake improves overall mood and can reduce anxiety and depressive symptoms [3].

Lemons are rich in citric acid, which has been shown to reduce physical fatigue and physiological stress [4].

Recipe Variations

This lemon water recipe is a great way to enjoy a burst of flavor without added sugar. However, if you want to make changes or additions, here are my recommendations.

  • Herbs: If you don’t have mint on hand, don’t worry. (I mean, it’s not the star of the show, right?) Rosemary or basil are both great options. (Basil is so good in infused water! Trust me.)
  • Water: This recipe uses cold water (obviously). However, depending on the season, you could use hot water, warm water, or simply room-temperature water. Hot or warm lemon water can be very soothing if you are feeling under the weather. Alternatively, sparkling water could also be very tasty!
  • Ice
