What is pico de gallo?

Pico de gallo is essentially a salsa. In fact, in Mexico, it’s known as salsa fresca, a combination of finely diced ingredients that include tomatoes, onions, cilantro, jalapenos, and a squeeze of citrus. The ingredients are all raw and fresh, unlike other types of cooked or blended salsas.

Nutrition For Mental Health

One tomato contains about 95% water and around 5% carbs. They are a good source of antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium, folate, and vitamin K. Tomatoes also contain the plant compounds lycopene, beta carotene, naringenin, and chlorogenic acid. A population-based, cross-sectional analysis found that a diet rich in tomatoes was associated with a lower occurrence of depression in the elderly population aged 70 years and over.

Substitutions + Variations

If you have most of the ingredients on hand but are only missing a few, these substitutions can help you avoid a trip to the store:

  • Lemon juice: If you forgot that you used up all your limes, perhaps when making my lime pickled onions, then fresh lemon juice works great.
  • Garlic powder: Ran out of garlic cloves? Garlic powder works in a literal pinch!
  • Cilantro: You can also add cilantro if you like, swapping out the jalapeno if you’d prefer or adding it alongside it. But if you hate cilantro, feel free to skip it.
