Ingredients + Notes

The best sweet potato fries recipe is made with tasty, simple ingredients.

Three sweet potatoes on a green tiled table, surrounded by small bowls labeled garlic powder, arrowroot powder, salt, chili powder, thyme, and oil.
  • Sweet potatoes: The main ingredient of this sweet potato fry recipe. (Obviously.) You can use orange sweet potatoes or vibrant purple ones if you can find them.
  • Arrowroot powder: This is a very important ingredient. Arrowroot powder helps these roasted sweet potato fries get crispy, so I don’t recommend skipping this one.

A full list of ingredients with exact amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Recipe Variations

Here are some variations you can try with this roasted sweet potato fries recipe to mix things up a bit.

  • Corn starch: If you don’t have arrowroot powder on hand or can’t find it in-store, then corn starch will work just fine.
  • Oil: Olive oil or coconut oil can be used for different flavor profiles if you prefer.
  • Black pepper: Add a touch more heat to your tasty fries with some ground black pepper. It’s also a great alternative to chili powder if you don’t have any on hand.
  • Cayenne pepper: A pinch of cayenne pepper (or more) is a great option for extra heat.

Sweet potato fries are tasty with so many dishes. Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy them.

  • Dips: Serve them with a range of dips, such as Homemade Tomato Ketchup without Onion and Garlic or Traditional hummus.
  • Main: Serve them alongside a chickpea burger or black bean veggie burger.
  • Loaded: Top the fries with vegan cheese, sour cream, diced green onions, Classic guacamole, and coconut bacon for a ‘loaded’ version.

Notes

Why won’t my sweet potato fries get crispy?
There could be a few different reasons why your oven-roasted sweet potato fries won’t get crispy. If you didn’t coat them in arrowroot powder or corn starch, that could be why they aren’t crispy. Alternatively, you could soak them in water beforehand, which can also help them get extra crispy. Finally, you can always turn your oven to broil for the last 5 minutes or so to really up their crispiness if you like.
